Aging in Place: Impressive Stats and Popular Trends Potential Franchise Owners Should Know About

One area of the home improvement market that has seen a huge spike in demand in recent years is the aging in place segment. This term refers to senior homeowners who want changes made that will allow them to maintain their comfort and independence by staying in their home. Research conducted by the AARP found that a full 90% of seniors want to stay where they're currently living. Even for people who require daily care, only 9% would rather live in a care facility. A big part of this is seniors are afraid that even if a facility provides a safe environment, they're going to be burdened by unwanted rules.

What Do Seniors Want?

Getting older creates a lot of mobility and safety challenges. Since seniors are aware of these issues, it shouldn't come as a surprise that they have strong opinions about what they want in terms of aging in place services. When surveyed, the eight improvements seniors feel are most important are:

·         Safety features (ex. non-slip floor surfaces)
·         Bathroom aides (ex. grab bars)
·         A way to call for help in an emergency situation
·         Entrances with no steps
·         Wider doorways
·         Doorknobs that feature a lever handle
·         Electrical outlets that are higher up the wall
·         Electrical switches that are lower on a wall

In terms of why seniors want these features, the most common is for their own safety. However, their decisions are also influenced by wanting to make their home more convenient for everyone, ensuring they can continue living independently, and providing features that another family member absolutely requires.

It's also worth mentioning that seniors themselves aren't the only people who are thinking about these issues. A full 88% of adult children think about their parents getting older on a regular basis. And of those, 54% feel strongly that their parents are going to need some form of help. Thanks to all these factors, the National Assocation of Home Builders believes this market will grow all the way to $25 billion in the near future.

Key Aging in Place Issues and Trends

Entering and exiting, going up and down stairs, and safely using the bathroom are three of the biggest issues related to aging in place. Because those issues present a wide range of challenges, many of the most popular trends address them in at least one way. For example, a lot of seniors are looking for ways to create a level entry and open up the space throughout their home so it's easier to navigate. This ties into many seniors' desire to be able to live on the ground floor.

Ensuring that storage is easy to reach and open is another significant trend that helps drive aging in place designs. This also influences many other design choices that enable someone to access what they need without having to bend. Also, creating bathrooms that balance comfort and safety plays a big part in satisfying the desires of aging in place customers.

What Should You Do If You're Serious About Owning a Franchise?

House Doctors Franchise Opportunity
If you're thinking about starting your own business, one option you may be strongly considering is becoming a franchise owner. The reason this opportunity can be so appealing is because instead of starting from scratch, you get to start with a proven system. That means you'll get things like manuals, established branding, training and support. Having access to all those components from day one will put you in a much stronger position than if you had to come up with everything on your own.

Since there are a lot of positive things about franchising, it shouldn't come as a surprise that there are many different opportunities available. But just because there are a lot of different franchises doesn't mean they're all equal. Not only do different franchises vary in terms of how much value they provide to their owners, but a big part of this equation also comes down to personal matters. For example, even though you'll be working with a proven business, you'll still need to apply different skills to make your business successful.

By taking the time to do an assessment of yourself, and then find franchise opportunities that are a good match for your existing skills and other personality traits, you'll be able to maximize your chances of having a thriving business.

The Six Personal Components You Need to Assess

Whenever you're ready to create a personal assessment, the first area you'll want to focus on is your financial resources. You'll want to not only look at how much capital you have to invest, but also what kind of additional savings you have that can be used as a buffer in the time that it takes to get your business up and running. Even though franchises usually hit a break-even point faster than other new businesses, it's still important to have a safety net for you and your family.

Your business experience is the second area you'll want to assess. As you list each job you've had, spend some time thinking about the key things you learned. This will tie into the third component, which is your professional and personal skills. Think about things like organization or speaking with customers on the phone that you excel at doing.

Next up is your personal preferences. Because you want to enjoy your work, think about what you like to spend your days doing. Fifth is family considerations. It's important to identify the type of day-to-day routine that's compatible with where you are in life. Finally, write down specific types of franchises you think would be good for what you want to do.

Is House Doctors a Good Franchise Fit for You?

If your assessment included having $40-$90K in capital, strong leadership experience, good management and people skills, and being comfortable working from both home and a small office, a House Doctors franchise may be the perfect opportunity for you to build a great business and lifestyle! A Franchise is a Great Way to Jumpstart the Process of Owning a Business

House Doctors Franchise Opportunity
There's a lot of value in spending part of your career working for someone else. While you can learn a lot from reading books, there's simply no substitute for spending time with someone who has been in the same line of work for several decades. Although there are plenty of people who want to dive right into owning their own business, first spending time in another business is a great way to learn what works, as well as what should be avoided.

All that being said, there's a good chance that a time will come when you feel like it's the right opportunity to strike out on your own. When you make that decision for yourself, it's important to give the business you start every possible advantage. The reason that's so important is because the failure rate among businesses is much higher than most people actually grasp. For every success story you see online or in a television interview, there are significantly more businesses that simply can't keep their doors open.

How to Put Your Business on a Path to Success

Because a full seventy percent of new businesses aren't able to last for more than two years, the first thing you need to do is ensure there's a very strong market for the business you're planning to open. Regardless of how great an idea may be, if people aren't willing to pay money for it, that idea is never going to turn into a sustainable business.

One of the hardest things about this stage of the business process is trying to do the necessary research to find out if a business is actually going to be viable. Lots of individuals who are at this stage wish there was a way to make it more efficient. If that's exactly how you feel, the good news is that's possible to do.

The solution to saving time and eliminating uncertainty about the viability of a business is to go with an option that's already been proven. And when you choose to become the owner of a House Doctors franchise, that's exactly what you'll get. House Doctors has not only proven the demand for home service jobs, but has also built the infrastructure needed to service those jobs in the most efficient way possible.

When you opt for this franchise, you don't have to make a bunch of mistakes before figuring out what actually works. Instead, you'll already have access to the technology, training, marketing and support you need to succeed. This will allow you to focus all your energy on managing your business and team so that it can become as successful as possible.

Owning a House Doctors franchise does take a lot of hard work. But because everything about the business is already proven, as long as you're willing to put in that work, you can be confident that you'll be well on your way to building a business that you're proud to tell everyone about. Road from IBM to handyman franchise

Thought you might be interested in some info on one of our newest franchisees. I always remember when I became a franchisee. I went to the first Convention thinking everyone would be like me. The amazing thing was that everyone was different. People come from different industries and careers but all had found themselves at a crossroads. There career had led them on a journey that had taken them to a point where business ownership or franchising was indeed an option or a road that they could travel. When choosing that road they found many travelers who would be joining them. The exciting thing about franchising was that they had an immediate bond with the others they met as they now traveled the same road together.

The road from IBM to handyman franchise

George Wasickanin whose career started with IBM in the 70's is the latest franchisee to open one of our House Doctors handyman and remodeling franchises. George plans to bring professional handyman and remodeling services to homeowners in the Rochester, New York area.
George’s father had worked for IBM so it was a natural progression for George in '79 to start his career in computer maintenance with IBM. George worked on the Kodak Park account in Rochester till 1984. and experienced IBM's leading training during that period. He attended many IBM training classes on everything from the infancy of telecommunications and disk technology to advanced computer systems. George left IBM in 1985 to start his own computer maintenance business where he maintained his competitive edge by satisfying customers needs and following through on promises so he did not let people down. He sold that business and returned to the Corporate world where his career path took him in a Sales and Management direction. However his entrepreneur journey still had some miles in it. While a Systems Administrator with Crosman Corporation he decided to look into franchising and learned about House Doctors.
We are pleased that George is bringing his IBM skills and his understanding of good customer service to our network. He expects to see continual growth in home repairs and remodeling in the Rochester, New York area. He knows a lot of the markets across the country are booming and the House Doctors professional approach and high ethics is what keeps customers coming back. George's goal lines up with HD that is to provide the best quality work and the best customer service for his customers. If you feel that would be important in any business you would like to be involved in please contact me.
Is good customer service important for a new business? Please comment.

Learn Exactly Why Franchising and the Home Improvement Industry are the Perfect Match

When it comes to starting a business, there are two basic paths you can follow. The first path is to do everything from scratch. While some people initially believe that sounds appealing, the reality is it can completely drain your time, energy and resources before you ever have an opportunity to really get the ball rolling.

The other path you can take is to basically bypass all the issues associated with the first path by becoming a franchise owner. Although succeeding as a franchise owner still requires a lot of hard work, the big advantage is you're not trying to move forward without actually knowing where you should be going. Instead, a franchise allows you to tap directly into a business model that's already been successful.

Franchising is Big Business

Many people are unaware of the massive role that franchises play in the economy. To put the size of franchises in perspective, they employ nearly ten million people in the US alone. And for the US economy, franchises drive over $830 billion worth of output. There are quite a few reasons why franchises will continue to be such a significant driver throughout so many different industries.

Choosing to hit the ground running with a franchise opportunity means you'll be able to leverage an established brand, enjoy economies of scale and utilize the best training within that industry. Additionally, you'll also reap that benefits that go along with having established systems, marketing approaches that have already been tested and support from other people who own a business just like yours.

What Makes the Home Improvement Industry an Attractive Opportunity?

Although there are one or more franchises available within just about any industry, that doesn't mean they're equally appealing. If you want to own a franchise with the most upside possible, it needs to be in a large industry. And thanks to the fact that consumer spending on home remodeling projects is expected to top $125 billion in the US, the home repair and improvement industry provides exactly the type of scale that you want.

While there's no shortage of opportunity within this industry, in order to tap into it, you need to be able to reach and close customers. Even though that may sound like a daunting task, when you have all the training and support that House Doctors provides to its franchise owners, it actually becomes quite manageable.

Live the Life You Truly Want

There's a lot of value for spending some years of your life working for someone else. During that time, you can learn invaluable skills that you can later use to accomplish anything you want. But just because there's value in that learning process doesn't mean you want to be chained to someone else for your entire life. If you want to take control of your financial future, House Doctors is a great opportunity. Once you become a franchise owner, you'll feel like you're finally living the life you truly want and deserve!
